THE
INSPECTION COMMITTEE
There
must be an Inspection Committee at all central institutions,
regional prisons and work camps- The Committee is to consist
of at least four members, and at least one of them must
be a judge. There must be both men and women on the Committee.
The members of the Inspection Committee may not be employed
at the prison.
The Inspection Committee is to make sure that you are
treated in accordance with law, regulations and other
rules that state how you should be treated. They are to
do this by visiting the institution, talking to the prisoners
and by being allowed to see all documents relating to
a case.
The members of the Committee have the right to talk to
you privately. They are under an obligation to observe
secrecy regarding what you tell them. If you feel you
have been treated uryjustly you may ask to talk to one
of the members of the Committee and discuss your case
with him or her.
The Inspection Committee has no authority within the prison.
The Committee is to try to resolve problems that arise
by conversations between you and the management of the
institution. The members of the Committee are to notify
the prison governor if they find something to criticize,
for example regarding the prison routines. If the prison
governor does not do anything about the complaint, the
Committee may raise the problem with the Prison Board.
The Inspection Committee must write an annual report on
the meetings they have had. The report is to be sent to
the Prison Board.
The rules regarding the Inspection Committee are stated
in the Prison Act § 5 and the Prison Regulations § 14.
