Correctional
Service of Norway Staff Academy - KRUS
- is a part of the Service for the Care and Confinement
of Offenders in Norway which also consists of the Prison
Service, the Probation Service and the Prison and Probation
Department IT-Service. In the country's 43 prison establishments
there are on average 2,500 inmates while the Probation Service
has some 2,000 clients.
The
Staff Academy has some 200 officers under training at any
given time. The training lasts for two years, consisting
both periods of lectures and studies as well as of practical
working experience at establishments in the Prison Service.
Before new training sessions start, vacant positions at
the training center are announced in several major daily
newspapers. Both males and females are encouraged to apply.
Applicants with foreign cultural background are also invited
to apply for admission to the training center.
To
be accepted as a student it is required that the applicant:
- either
is qualified for college training or is particularly qualified
through other kinds of training or experiences
- has
the desired maturity and personal qualities necessary
to do a good job as a prison officer
- has
completed his or her military service or have been exempted
from the service is between 21 and 35 years of age
- is
a Norwegian citizen
- passes
a physical test demonstrating both strength and endurance
The
Staff Academy gives training in professional conduct, and
development of character and personality is emphasized.
